...Dreaming of a White Xmas
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

It was Christmas 1963, and Bing Crosby’s wonderful “White Christmas”, made an international success by his equally wonderful voice, became a precious part of my repertoire. It was one of the 12 pieces chosen for my second album ever, entitled “ Non è facile avere 18 anni “ – ‘Being 18’s Not Easy’. I still remember how excited I was at the idea of recording it, and making this piece of America a part of me. The excitement became pure childlike enthusiasm when the person arranging my songs at that time, Luis Enriquez Bacalov, finally played me his orchestrated version. I was dumbstruck, and fell head over heels in love with that choir of voices which right from the musical introduction set the beat like some surreal, unheard-of instrument, followed by the shimmering cascade of magical violins which cleared the way for the notes of my voice.
I remember it was such a pure joy to sing that it took me only two tracks to get the definitive recording version - the one you’ve heard on my home page.
Christmas 1963 was a memorable one for me, in so many ways. Opening her presents by the tree was not just little Rita-the-unknown-seamstress from Turin, but Rita Pavone, a singer with a fan club that loved and admired her. My childhood dream had come true.
Well, the years have passed since then. The girl became a woman, then a wife, then a mother. Many more Happy Christmases have beat out their yearly rhythm for me, but that was the first really significant, really important one. Which is why I wanted to share it with you all, through this recording of so long ago.
A Happy Christmas, my fans and friends. May your days be merry and bright, certainly, but may peace, serenity, satisfying work, and, as we Italians always add, primarily health make this Xmas … unique! This is my Christmas card to you.
Your own Rita.
