La “ piccola meraviglia “ è davvero una “ grande meraviglia “.
Lo scorso anno, 1963, proprio quando arrivavano notizie favolose sui Beatles dalla Inghilterra, cominciammo a ricevere anche dall’Italia dei fantastici flashes su una certa Rita Pavone. In soli 13 mesi dal suo primo disco, era diventata la numero 1 delle classifiche discografiche in Italia. Alla fine di marzo 1963, il suo primo singolo intitolato “ La partita di pallone “ aveva già venduto 1 milione di copie e, ai primi del 1964, con soli due nuovi 45 giri, le vendite erano salite fino a 3 milioni. Un avvenimento incredibile per un mercato come quello Italiano!
Ma subito dopo, il magico fenomeno Pavone cominciò ad invadere anche altri paesi, facendoci giungere notizie di vendite impressionanti anche dal Giappone, Francia, Spagna e Sud- America.
Ebbene, se l’aveste vista alla sua prima apparizione in Nord-America- debuttando nientemeno che all’Ed Sullivan Show, proprio come i Beatles –, avrete capito in un attimo il perché di tanto clamore internazionale.
Lei è piccolina, infatti. Alta circa un metro e 53/54 centimetri. Ha 18 anni ma ne dimostra molti di meno. E’ un “cosino “. E’ magra. Pesa solo 47 chili. E’ intelligente, sveglia. Lei ti suggerisce parole Inglesi che suonano come vecchie canzoni. Parole come elfo, monello, folletto ,gattina , ti vengono in mente quando la vuoi descrivere. L’hanno infatti soprannominata “ il passerotto con gli occhi alla Jackie Coogan “, il famoso monello del film di Chaplin .
Insomma, diciamocelo,lei è davvero UNICA !
In un serial televisivo Italiano simile al nostro “ Dennis the Menace “ ( Dennis la peste ), interpreta addirittura il ruolo di un ragazzino di 12 anni – Gian Burrasca- che ne combina di tutti i colori , vestita con un costume di scena che ricorda appunto il monello Coogan: pantaloni al ginocchio, bretelle, camicia da uomo , stivaletti e capelli tagliati corti corti.
Un abbigliamento che Rita ha fatto suo .E lo stile e il suono della sua voce sono anch’essi unici come gli abiti che indossa. La voce ricorda stranamente, nella sua vitalità e incisività, l’ altro passerotto, Edith Piaf. E tutto con sincerità, convinzione, sentimento e pura emozione.
Ascoltate questo Album e capirete perché la gente ami tanto la “ ragazzina “.
Questa è una antologia di grandi successi degli anni passati dedicati ai giovanissimi– da “ Splish Splash” a “ Lipstick on Your Collar” sino ai più recenti e inediti twist.
E la ragazzina dimostra che ha anche cuore e anima quando interpreta “Wait for Me “ o “ It’s Not Easy “.Difatti, qui da noi, pochi hanno realizzato che in Italia Rita Pavone è considerata come una autentica interprete di ballate, di canzoni sentimentali .
Nessuna meraviglia quindi, che la “ piccola meraviglia” sia già una “ grande meraviglia “.

The “ small wonder “ is really a big wonder.
Last year, just as we heard fabulous reports about the Beatles in England, so we kept receiving fantastic flashes about this Rita Pavone in Italy. Within thirteen months after cutting her first record, she was # 1 on the Italian hit parade. It was March of ’63 when the disc hit the million mark. As her succeeding records appeared, sales kept mounting and soon showed three million.
Unbelievable . considering the size of the Italian recode market.
But then the Pavone pasta began working its magic in other countries.
Soon there were reports of record.breaking reactions in Japan, Germany, the Benelux countries, Spain and South America.
Well , if you saw her on her first appearance before American audiences – she was a “first “ on the Sullivan show, as were the Beatles – you understood in a flash what the shouting was about.
She’s small – tiny, in fact. Only five feet. She’s young, only eighteen and looks younger. She’s light. Only eighty pounds. She’s bright. She slings English words and phrases around like old songs. Words like elf, gamin, imp, kitten come to mind when you want to describe her.she has been called “ a small bird of a girl with a power voice “ and “ a sparrow with Jackie Coogan eyes “.
Just say she’s unique. In an Italian movie version of our comic-strip character “ Dennis the Menace “, she plays a boy. And her startling work costume makes her look like the Coogan kid once did – black pants, suspenders, man’s shirt, boots and close- cropped haircut.
The style and sound are as unique as the get-up. The voice- strangely reminiscent in its vitality snd metallic thrust of that other sparrow, Edith Piaf.
Also, the sincerity, conviction, feeling and sheer excitement.
Listen to this album and you’ll see why they “ luve” the “ Keed”, as she would Say. This is an anthology of teen-age hits of the past years – from Splish Splash and Lipstick on Your Collar to recent twisters. And the “ Keed’s” got heart as well as spirit, as you’ll hear Wait for Me and It’s Not Easy. In fact, few people here realize that Rita Pavone is thought of principally as a ballad singer in Italy.
It’s really no wonder that the “ small wonder “ is the singing world’s new wonder.
