C’era una volta ... una coppia di sposi, Giovanni e Maria, che già erano genitori di due bei ragazzi ma che aspiravano ad avere anche una femminuccia, così ci provarono finché il loro desiderio non divenne realtà.
Qualcuno afferma che fin dalla nascita, lei aveva già la faccia piena di lentiggini. Altri invece che era tutta “ occhi “, a parte le lentiggini …. e infine, molti altri affermano con certezza assoluta, che lei disponeva di due polmoni grandi come una casa!
La chiamarono Rita e lei, fin da piccola, sognava di diventare una grande cantante, tant’è che, quando l’anno scorso un giornalista italiano chiese a lei, adolescente diciassettenne ormai famosa : “ Come ci si sente a diventare un fatto canoro sensazionale dalla sera alla mattina ? “, lei rispose “ Che significa dalla sera alla mattina? Io canto da quando avevo sei anni ! “
Oggi Rita – che in Italia rappresenta qualcosa come Elvis Presley e i Beatles messi insieme - , ha 18 anni ma ne dimostra 14 e possiede già la “ magia “ di una grande cantante senza età, qualità che posseggono solo tutti i grandi artisti.
Molti giornali e riviste si sforzano di capire il perché di questa sua incredibile popolarità, non più solo in Italia ma anche in Europa e in tutta l’America Latina.
Per i suoi coetanei, lei è il loro “ campione “, la loro patrocinante ; le ragazze la considerano “ una di loro “; i ragazzi, “ la loro migliore amica “; i bambini fanno i salti per aria quando la vedono, imitandone le movenze e ballando come lei il twist; le mamme la considerano una ragazza perbene che amerebbero avere come figlia; i padri provano un senso protettivo nei suoi confronti perché , nonostante tutta la sua energia, è piccolina e apparentemente fragile, e infine, i nonni, benché tradizionalisti, finiscono con l’accettare il suo genere di musica. “ Sentono “ che RITA è okay.
Il fenomenale successo di Rita cominciò quando, il 1° Settembre 1962, vinse ad Ariccia, una cittadina dei cosiddetti Castelli Romani, ad un passo da Roma, la prima edizione della “Festa degli Sconosciuti “.
La concorrenza era molto agguerrita, ma quando questa piccola , timida, e quasi goffa ragazzina dagli occhi alla Jackie Coogan, il “ monello “ di Charlot, e dalle mani espressive salì sul palcoscenico, avvenne l’imprevedibile miracolo: come aprì bocca e ancor prima che finisse la sua canzone, risultò evidente per tutti che “ lei “ sarebbe stata di lì a poco l’imbattibile vincitrice.
Nel suo primo anno di contratto con l’etichetta discografica RCA Italiana, le sue “vendite “ superarono i 3 milioni di copie, fatto questo senza precedenti in Italia. In Germania, il suo primo 45 giri raggiunse in breve la vetta delle classifiche; in Argentina, la prima e terza posizione fra i dischi più venduti nonostante la barriera linguistica che, in questo paese, esiste fra l’italiano e il loro spagnolo /castellano. Insomma, nulla sembra ormai bloccare il successo della piccola fanciulla torinese.
Corteggiata e ricercata da tutti i festivals internazionali, è ormai imminente anche il suo ingresso nel mondo del cinema.
Agli inizi del 1964, Rita riesce a realizzare persino il suo grande sogno di bambina, approdando a New York, la Mecca di tutti i più popolari giovani artisti di oggi.
Ha registrato questo Album, per la prima volta in lingua Americana, negli studi della RCA Victor della 24ma Strada e sotto la supervisione di Joe Renè.
Fin dalla prima sessione discografica, l’entusiasmo è stato generale.
Ascoltando questo LP,sarete tutti d’accordo che l’Italiana Rita Pavone ha molto di più di due grandi polmoni e di un viso “ tutto occhi “. Lentiggini a parte….

Once upon a time a young Italian couple named John and Mary, who had two handsome boys, wished very hard that their third child would be a girl. Their wish came true.
Some people say she had freckles all over her face even at the birth.
And some people say she was all eyes – except for the freckles. And other people say that she certainly had a good pair of lungs. Her parents named her Rita. When she was a little girl she wished very hard that she could become a great singer.
Last year, when an Italian reporter asked the then sixteen-year-old RITA PAVONE how it felt to be an overnight singing sensation, she said, “ What do you mean, “ overnight “ ? I’ve been singing ever since I was six. “ Today, Rita – who in her native Italy is something like Elvis Presley and the Beatles rolled in one – is almost eighteen years old. She looks fourteen, and she has the timeless quality of all great artists. Many feature stories, and even more numerous articles, have tried to analyze Pavone’s incredible popularity, not only in Italy but all over continental Europe and Latin America.
Her contemporaries consider her their champion, their advocate; the girls think of her as “one of them”; the boys – as their private girl friends; little kids jump on the platforms when she performs, and twist to her tunes; mothers feel she is a nice, well-mannered kid whom they would like to have for a daughter; fathers want to protect her, for she is tiny and – with all her energy – on the frail side.
Even grandmothers in Italy, tradition bound as they are, do not mind her type of music making. They have inkling RITA is strictly O.K.
Rita’s phenomenal success began in September of 1962 when she won the much-publicized “Competition of the Unknowns “ in Ariccia, an Italian town outside of Rome. Her competition was immense – but suddenly, when this shy and almost gawky little girl with the Jackie Coogan eyes and the expressive hands stepped onto the platform – something happened. She opened her mouth, and before the first song was over it was quite evident – here would be unbeatable winner.
In her first year as recording artist with RCA Italiana, Rita’s disc sales passed the 3,000,000 mark, an unprecedented feat for Italy.
In Germany, her first single recorded in the German language quickly moved to the top of the hit parade. In Argentina, Rita’s records ranked one and three on the charts and, as she was heard in Italian, in this case not even the language barrier could stop the tiny trooper from Torino.
Festivals are being planned around her personal appearances and, before long, Pavone will assume her first motion -picture role.
Early in 1964, Rita was able to fulfil a long-wished-for dream: to visit
New York- the Mecca of all young popular artists of our day. She cut this album, her first American-language LP, in the RCA Victor studios on New York’s 24th Street, under the supervision pf producer Joe Renè. From the very first session, enthusiasm ran high. When you hear this finished product, we believe you will agree that Italy’s Rita Pavone has much more than a good pair of lungs and a face that is all eyes – except for the freckles. Italy’s Rita Pavone has a very special kind of talent for singing her heart out.
