Domenica 10 Ottobre ad Amsterdam, all’età di 70 anni, è scomparso colui che ,a detta di tutti, era considerato il Re del Soul. Parlo di Solomon Burke, grande voce e straordinario autore di tantissimi brani di enorme successo, il cui pezzo più famoso, “ Everybody Needs Somebody to Love “, colonna sonora del film cult “ The Blues Brothers “, resterà per sempre nel cuore e nella memoria di tutti noi.
Io non solo ho avuto solo la grande fortuna di conoscere Burke personalmente , artista generoso e pieno di sensibilità, ma ho altresì avuto l’onore e l’ inaspettato privilegio, di duettare insieme a lui.
Questo fatto è avvenuto l’11 Dicembre 2008, quando Solomon Burke venne ad esibirsi a Lugano nell’auditorio della RTSI, Radio Televisione della Svizzera Italiana, per un concerto
pre - natalizio che chiudeva con la sua performance, in diretta radiofonica, la stagione musicale della rete.
Io ero stata invitata ad assistere al concèrto da Jacky Marti, mio buon amico e dirigente responsabile del settore della RTSI per gli eventi musicali che si tengono da sempre nel Canton Ticino, il cui più famoso resta “ L’ Estival Jazz “ , evento musicale per eccellenza che porta sulle scene ticinesi il meglio della musica mondiale.
Seduta in prima fila , ricordo quindi che mi stavo beando all’ascolto delle bellissime melodie R&B splendidamente interpretate da Burke, quando improvvisamente, sulle note grintose di “ Proud Mary “ vengo dallo stesso sollecitata a raggiungerlo sul palco per cantare questo brano insieme a lui. Potete immaginare il mio sconcerto.
Una volta salita su, ho cercato di spiegare a Solomon che la tonalità da lui usata non mi si confaceva e che quindi … Ma lui non mi ha fatto neppure finire la frase, e subito invitata la
sua fenomenale band a suonare nella mia tonalità, ha dato l’avvio ad un piccolo inedito show dentro lo show. Il risultato è stato fantastico.
Dopo l’esibizione, applauditissima, ancora sconvolta per l’accaduto, una volta ringraziati Burke e la sua orchestra, sono scesa dal palco e sono tornata al mio posto in sala per godermi il seguito del concèrto, ma lui, qualche tempo dopo, mi ha nuovamente richiamata in scena per duettare questa volta in una strepitosa versione di “ Silent Night “.
Il risultato di questo splendido incontro musicale, che ha mandato in delirio il pubblico presente in sala, lo potete vedere da voi stessi guardando questa breve clip di quella serata.
Ancora grazie di cuore, Re del Soul, per quel bellissimo ed indimenticabile momento.
E grazie per tutto quello hai regalato a noi fans da sempre con la tua splendida musica.Che Dio accolga la tua anima con gioia.
Sono certa che con te, il Paradiso avrà di certo un motivo in più per cantare .

The man everyone considered the King of Soul died in Amsterdam on Sunday 10 October, aged 70. He was Solomon Burke, the astounding voice and wonderful song-writer of so many hits, though it is probably his most famous song, “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”, the sound-column to the cult film “The Blues Brothers “, which we’ll most often find ourselves humming and smiling along to.
Burke was a generous, sensitive artist, and I had not just the good luck to know him personally, but the unexpected honour and privilege of singing a duet with him.
It was the 11 December 2008, when he came to Lugano to conclude the pre-Christmas concert at RTSI, Italian-Swiss Radio and Television – a live concert which traditionally brought the network’s concert season to an end.
I’d been invited by my good friend Jacky Marti, director of RTSI’s long-standing calendar of musical events in the Canton Ticino; the most famous is the summer jazz festival “ EstivalJazz ”, which regularly brings together state-of-the-art world music.
I was there in the front row, humming happily along to the wondrous R & B rhythms Burke was producing, when all of a sudden, over the perky notes of “Proud Mary”,he was asking me to step up onto the stage and sing it. Well I was “Proud Rita”, definitely, but, well, disconcerted. I tried to explain, once I was up there, that his pitch wasn’t right for me so … But he didn’t even let me finish: he just got that phenomenal band of his to pitch it to my range and off I launched into a mini show-within-the-show.
The result was – though I say it myself - fantastic. When the clapping stopped, I thanked Burke and the orchestra, got down from the stage, and, still stunned, sank into my seat to try to concentrate on the rest of the concert, but not for long: there he was again, calling me up for a duet this time, a wondrous “Silent Night”. The audience went wild, but you don’t have to take their word for it: have a look at this short clip.
